TDIU Eligibility Screener
Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability pays at the 100% rate when your service-connected conditions prevent you from working. Answer a few questions to see if you may qualify under 38 CFR §4.16.
What is your highest single service-connected disability rating?
This is the rating for your single most severe condition, not the combined total.
What Is TDIU?
TDIU pays compensation at the 100% rate to veterans whose service-connected disabilities prevent substantially gainful employment — even if your combined rating is below 100%.
For 2026, the 100% single rate is approximately $3,737.85/month. A veteran at 70% receives $1,604.41 — that is a difference of over $25,000 per year.
Two Paths to TDIU
Schedular — §4.16(a)
One condition at 60%+ OR combined 70%+ with one condition at 40%+. This is the standard path.
Extraschedular — §4.16(b)
No minimum rating threshold, but requires referral to the Director of Compensation Service. Needs compelling evidence of unemployability.
