How to Use the VA Online

Almost everything the VA offers now runs through three tools: VA.gov, the VA: Health and Benefits mobile app, and My HealtheVet. This page walks you through signing up for each one and using it, in plain English, step by step, so you never have to hunt for it somewhere else.

Start Here

One account unlocks all three

Here is the single most important thing to understand: the VA now uses one sign-in for everything. When you create a Login.gov or ID.me account, that same login gets you into VA.gov, the mobile app, and My HealtheVet. You set it up once, you do not need a separate username and password for each.

The old My HealtheVet and DS Logon sign-ins have been retired. If you have not signed in for a while, you will be asked to move to Login.gov or ID.me the next time you try. Do it, it is the safest option, and it is the only one that will keep working.

Part 1 · The Website

How to Sign Up for VA.gov

VA.gov is the front door to your benefits. This is where you file claims, check status, and download your official letters. Here is exactly how to create your account. Without a verified account you are stuck waiting on mail and phone lines while your deadlines keep running. Your part is to finish identity verification all the way through, write down which sign-in service you used, and check your claim status and letters at least once a week.

Go to VA.gov and choose “Sign in”
1

Go to VA.gov and choose “Sign in”

Open a web browser and go to VA.gov. In the top-right corner select Sign in. You do not need an account to read information, but you need one to file, check status, or see your records.

Create a Login.gov or ID.me account
2

Create a Login.gov or ID.me account

The VA uses two verified sign-in partners: Login.gov (run by the federal government) and ID.me. Pick one, enter your email, and create a strong password. Both work everywhere the VA accepts sign-in.

Verify your identity
3

Verify your identity

You will be asked to confirm who you are with a state ID or driver’s license, your Social Security number, and a phone number in your name. This one-time identity check is what unlocks your claim file, decisions, and health record.

Turn on two-factor security
4

Turn on two-factor security

Choose how you want to receive your one-time security code, text message, phone call, or an authenticator app. This protects your VA account the same way your bank protects your money.

Sign in and confirm your profile
5

Sign in and confirm your profile

Once verified, sign in at VA.gov. Check that your mailing address, direct-deposit, and contact information are correct, the VA mails decisions and pays benefits based on what is in this profile.

Ready to create your account?

Signing up is an action you take on the VA’s own secure site. This is the one time we send you to the VA directly, because the account has to be created there.

What It Does

What You Can Do on VA.gov

Once your account is verified, the website becomes your command center. These are the tools that matter most to a disability claim. Each one lets you see what the VA sees, and that is how you catch a missed exam, a request for evidence, or a decision before it costs you. Your part is to use them, download every letter, and keep your own copies outside the portal.

File a claim online

File a claim online

Start and submit a disability compensation claim (VA Form 21-526EZ) directly, upload your evidence, and get an instant confirmation the VA received it.

Check your claim or appeal status

Check your claim or appeal status

See exactly where your claim or appeal sits, what stage it is in, and what the VA is waiting on, updated as the VA works your file.

Download your decision letters

Download your decision letters

Pull your rating decision, benefit-summary letter, and proof-of-service letters as PDFs, any time, no waiting for the mail.

Upload evidence & respond to the VA

Send in nexus letters, buddy statements, DBQs, and private records, and respond to VA requests without mailing anything.

File an Intent to File

Lock in your effective date with VA Form 21-0966 before you are ready to file the full claim, this can protect up to a year of back pay.

Manage payments & dependents

The Veterans We Fight For

Real Veterans. Real Claims. Real Outcomes.

Every case on this desk belongs to someone who served. These are the veterans this practice represents, across every era, branch, and condition: the Vietnam vet who was told it was too late, the Gulf War vet the system called a mystery, the young veteran who walked out of a five minute exam with a zero. Different stories, same fight. The record decides the claim, so we build the record.

Part 2 · The App

How to Use the VA Mobile App

The official app is called VA: Health and Benefits. It is free, and it is the fastest way to check a claim from your phone. Download it from the Apple App Store or Google Play, then sign in with the same Login.gov or ID.me account you use for the website.

There is nothing new to set up. If your VA.gov account works, the app works, it simply puts the most-used tools one tap away.

Part 3 · Your Health Record

How to Sign Up for & Use My HealtheVet

My HealtheVet is the VA’s health portal, and for a disability claim, it is a goldmine. It holds your VA medical records, provider notes, lab results, and medication list, the exact evidence the VA looks for when it rates your condition.

The good news: if you already made a VA.gov account, you are already signed up. My HealtheVet now runs on the same Login.gov or ID.me sign-in. Here is how to get in and put it to work.

Sometimes a Phone Call Is Better

When to Just Call the VA

The website handles most things, but some questions are simply faster with a live person. When that is the case, here are the numbers that actually get you where you need to go. Phone answers are not binding, so whatever you are told still has to show up in writing. Your part is to note the date, time, and name of the person you spoke with, and ask what document or letter will confirm what they said.

Need the actual VA forms?

Every form the claims process uses, what it is for, whether to file it online or by mail, and how it fits your case, is explained in plain English in our Forms Library. The wrong form can cost you months or reset your effective date, and the VA will not stop to tell you that you picked the wrong one. Your part is to confirm the form fits your situation before you sign and send it.

Tips to Prepare for Your VA Claim Exam

Tips to Prepare for Your VA Claim Exam

Your responsibility as a veteran

Your Part in This Is Not Optional

I will be straight with you. No advocate on earth can win a claim for a veteran who will not do his or her part. The VA decides on the record, and you are the only person who can build the medical side of that record. We do the legal and forensic work. You do yours. Here is what that means, every single time:

  • See a doctor and get every symptom written into your medical record. If it is not on paper, the VA treats it as if it never happened.
  • Keep a symptom journal. Dates, flare-ups, missed work, the nights you did not sleep. That is the evidence of how this condition actually runs your life.
  • Answer every VA letter and every request for evidence before the deadline. Silence gets claims denied.
  • Show up to your C&P exam and describe your worst days honestly. Do not tough it out in that room. Do not exaggerate either.

You do your job and we will do ours. That is how claims get won.

Choose Your Service

The Three Services

We offer three completely separate services, kept distinct on purpose so you know exactly what you are buying, what it costs, and how it is paid. These are not tiers of one agreement, you choose the single option that fits your situation.

Two are contingency representation with no cost up front; they differ by how hard the case is and how the fee gets paid. The third is a flat-fee forensic report for the veteran who wants to fight the claim himself.

An accredited claims agent and a veteran reviewing a clean, single-issue appeal together
Option 1

Standard Direct-Pay Representation

20% of back pay

No cost up front, nothing out of pocket. The VA withholds our fee and pays us directly under §14.636(h). Best for cleaner, more recent, single-issue denials, routine higher-level reviews, supplemental claims, and rating increases, carried all the way to the Board of Veterans’ Appeals.

Option 2

High-Complexity Representation

30% of back pay

For high-complexity cases, long claim histories, prior Board denials, CUE, complex effective-date and TDIU fights, multi-issue toxic exposure. Still no cost up front. Because the VA pays a rep only up to 20% directly, the VA sends your full retro to you and we invoice you directly for the 30%. Lawful, but never entered into lightly.

Option 3

Mission 5 Intelligence Brief

$750 flat

A standalone forensic file review and written road map, not representation. For the veteran with a tough, older case who wants to fight it himself and keep 100% of his back pay. We audit your file, show you every error, and hand you the plan. Available only to veterans who already have a VA decision.

See full details

The exact contingency percentage on your case is set in a written agreement by the complexity of the work, always within the maximum the law allows. Federal-court litigation, if it is ever needed, is a separate, pre-agreed arrangement.
