I hear it constantly from older veterans: "It has been forty years — surely it is too late." It is not. There is no deadline on filing a VA claim, and age often strengthens the case rather than weakening it.
Conditions worsen — and so should your rating
Joints, hearing, and heart conditions rarely improve with time. If a service-connected condition has gotten worse, you are entitled to file for an increase reflecting its current severity.
Benefits that come with age
- Aid and Attendance for veterans who need help with daily activities
- Housebound benefits for those largely confined to home
- Special Monthly Compensation for loss of use and related conditions
The claim you never filed in your thirties is still yours to file now. The record from decades ago, combined with today's diagnosis, can still carry it.
